Coping With Weather Event-Related Stress

First and foremost, feeling stressed before, during and after serious weather events is perfectly normal. Everyone deals with stress in one form or another during events. According to the Florida Department of Health (www.floridahealth.gov), successfully dealing with stress begins with recognizing how we are reacting and then taking steps to manage those reactions in a healthy way. Good advice.

Stress can have a very negative impact on your overall health. For example, Irma’s wrath played havoc with the utilities in Florida leaving vast portions of the state without power and more important, without air conditioning. It’s hot in Florida in September. No air conditioning surely added to the daily difficulties by making it hard to sleep. Having trouble sleeping, eating abnormally and being nervous all take a toll on one’s body and mind. The trick is to take charge of your stress, focus on the positive, and manage your stress. Do that and you’ll find your stress will lessen and ultimately go away.

The Florida Department of Health has published the following tips to help manage stress:

  • Follow a normal routine as much as possible. Wake up and go to sleep at your usual times. Eat meals at your regular time.
  • Take care of yourself. Do healthy activities. Eat well-balanced meals; get plenty of rest and exercise.
  • Talk about your feelings and accept help. Feeling stress after an event is normal. Talking about it with alleviate it.
  • Turn it off and take a break. Yes, stay up-to-date and keep informed. But, it can become overwhelming. Take a break from it and do something you enjoy.
  • Get out and help others. Volunteer and help your neighbors and community. It’s a win-win for everyone.

A Well-Stocked Trunk

Now that you’ve decided to pack the car and enjoy a weekend getaway, don’t forget your trunk! A well-stocked trunk can mean the difference between a pleasant trip and one that you wish you hadn’t taken. Let’s face it; things happen no matter how well we plan. We’re good about keeping the maintenance up our cars, but they are machines and things can and will go wrong.

Some of the items we’re going to remind you to have on hand are common sense items and you may laugh that we’re even bringing them up. Like an umbrella for instance. Of course you have an umbrella in your car. But the last time it rained and you brought it into the house or your office, did you put it back in the car? Maybe yes or maybe no.

Consider keeping these items in your car and/or trunk:

Car

  • Umbrella
  • Pen and paper
  • Spare change
  • USB device charger
  • Flashlight

 

Trunk:

  • Spare tire (be sure to check the pressure regularly as it will deflate over time)
  • Jumper cables
  • Fix-a-flat
  • Multi-tool
  • Matches, lighter or fire starter (if matches, keep in a moisture-proof container)
  • Bottles of water (3 or 4)
  • Battery operated radio
  • First aid kit

You might want to consider purchasing a small road kit, as it will have all of the important items above and more like road flares, etc. They are readily available from AAA and on Amazon.

Think of your trunk as your survival kit. It’s there ready for use when you need it. Let’s hope it collects dust in your trunk and you never need it!

Roasted Fall Vegetables

Ingredients:

  • Butternut squash, cubed
  • Red bell pepper, seeded and cut in chunks
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Potatoes, cubed
  • Onion, cut in chunks
  • Rosemary, 1 sprig of fresh
  • Oregano (to taste)
  • Onion Powder (to taste)
  • Garlic Powder (to taste)
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 475 degrees F

 

  1. Place all the ingredients in a gallon ziplock bag.

 

  1. Toss vegetables in the bag until evenly coated with the spices and olive oil.

 

  1. Spread evenly in a single layer, on a roasting pan.

 

  1. Roast for 40 minutes or until browned.
